As part of our topic, we have been learning about the Water Cycle and, as part of our Engage day, had a special visitor from Severn Trent to speak to us about how they make our water safe.

We have been using Digimaps to find the area of the field.

We enjoyed our WOW day (engage event) to learn about WW2.

We enjoyed our trip to the Space Centre to learn more about space,

We enjoyed creating out own dances in PE.

We have been investigating different types of mountains and how they are shown on the map. We had to match the contour lines to the shape of the mountains to test our knowledge and understanding. We then researched how different types of mountains are created and what they look like.

In Science, We have been investigating the link between mass (kg) and weight (newtons). We measured the weight and mass of lots of different objects that we could find in the classroom.

As part of our Topic lessons, we created our own Stop Motion animation movies.

As part of our Engage day, we looked at Walt Disney and the history of films using animation.

On our WOW day, year 5 visited a Mayan 'museum' and investigated their lives and culture. We looked at pictures, artefacts and information to start to understand who the Maya were. We then used our historical knowledge to predict what some artefacts were before having a game of Tok-a-Pok (Mayan ballgame). We then became world explorers and checked our geographical knowledge with lots of challenges before finishing the morning with some Mayan hot chocolate (not as nice as it sounds)!

This week we have been investigating the influences that the Ancient Greeks had on the modern world. At the start of the week, we looked at the design of theatres and how storytelling was important to the Greeks. We then wrote our own speeches explaining the most important thing that the Greeks gave us. It was very difficult to choose the most important! We then ended the week by expressing our learning by performing our speeches to other children in year 5.

This week in English we have been writing poems based around space. We read and compared different types of poem then decided on a description poem for us to write. We investigated metaphors and similes before writing our own. We then all published our work and performed our poems to the class after gaining some tips from Michael Rosen.

Year 5 have enjoyed learning how to be safe on their bikes on the road. They have learnt safe riding positions (normal and follow me) and how to signal to other road users to remain safe.

As part of our music lessons, we have been learning the song 'Like a Prayer' thinking about the tempo and beats in the music.

During our Topic lessons this week, we have been focusing on creating our artwork based around Fanelli’s Greek Mythological Creature Collages. We have ripped up travel magazines to create pattern, texture and colour within our artwork. With some more time to finish them next week, we can’t wait to show you our completed pieces.

This week, Year 5 took part in a European Languages Day workshop, where they learnt their colours in French.

In Guided Reading, we have been reading the stories within our new books. We have discussed wizards, flying monsters and wars. We then have answered a range of questions in our books to show our understanding of the story.

In Maths, in Year 5, we have been learning about Place Value. We have been reading, writing and representing numbers up to 1,000,000.

On our Wow Day, we explored different Greek foods. After deciding on the food we liked, we designed, created and evaluated our own Greek meal using pitta breads that we made ourselves!

Transition Day was fabulous, smiles and laughter were plentiful. Everybody is looking forward to September now!
