In our English lessons, we are reading I was a Rat by Phillip Pullman. We created freeze frames to show what happened in a scene when Roger came to meet Bob and Joan for the first time. Roger arrives and has no manners and has to be taught to eat properly before he destroys his own bedding by chewing it to pieces.

Topic Engage

In our D & T lessons, we have studied Tudor embroidery. The children have designed their own patterns using running and cross stitch. They have then recreated their design on their binca using the stitches.

In our history work, we have looked at the life of Ferdinand Magellan. We used some actions to show the life of Magellan and help us to tell his story and remember it for future lessons.

Science Day - We investigated the role of a forensic scientist. In our classroom, we tried to find as much evidence as possible that different people had been in there. We looked out for hairs, sweet papers, mud from shoes, cast-aside toys, items of clothing etc. We then looked at our own fingerprints using a magnifying glass and compared them with other people.

Also, as part of science day, we explored the phases of the moon and we discussed why the moon appears to change shape. We discussed key vocabulary such as waning and waxing before we made our own moon dials.

Year 3 went on a trip to visit Selly Manor Museum. They all had a wonderful time learning about what daily life was like for people during the Tudor period. It was a fantastic day and the children got the chance to dress up and play lots of different Tudor games. They then enjoyed a brilliant tour around the manor house and even got the chance to lie in a Tudor bed and try on Tudor armour. They are now all Tudor experts! Thank you to the amazing helpers who joined us on the day.

We have been busy exploring fractions and this week we looked at understanding fractions on a number line. We also recapped the vocabulary related to fractions.

Year 3 enjoyed researching the author Dav Pilkey as part of World Book Day. They read one of his books and then created their own comic strips. They also wrote a character profile on Dog Man.

On our WOW day, we acted out The Battle of Bosworth. On the hill were Belle (Richard III) and her army, who had a larger group of people. On the playground were George (Henry VII) and his men. By the goal was Lucas (Lord Stanley) and his men. When Henry VII got into trouble, Lord Stanley came to help and Henry VII was crowned King of England on the battlefield.

In Lowry, we had a fantastic morning finding out about the beginning of the Tudor period and important events that happened during this time in history. We use our art skills to create a class timeline and had fun re-enacting the Battle of Bosworth.

Also on our WOW day, we looked at The Tudors and sorted events from this time period. In Riley 3, we collaborated to put the timeline in order and the children worked together superbly.

In our music lessons, we have performed Three Little Birds by Bob Marley. The children learnt how to play crotchet notes and how to count rests. Their timing was superb as a group of nearly thirty children.

In art, we have been exploring collage techniques. Children researched and practised tearing, cutting and layering. They used their knowledge of African patterns to design their own artwork and created it using their favourite collage techniques.

Year 3 have been working on their ball skills. They have been finding different ways to move balls around their bodies with the help of their partner.

Year 3 have been working on their cookery skills. The children made a tasty African inspired couscous dish using chopping, grating and peeling techniques. The children had a fantastic time learning new skills and tasting new foods.

In history, we explored how the Kingdom of Benin came to an end. We used historical facts from our previous lessons to act out the scene. This was an extremely fun lesson as we got to show our final performance to the rest of the class.

We planned and carried out an investigation to see how shadows change when an object is moved closer to or further away from a torch.

Our new theme has been Dreams and Goals. We have thought carefully about the steps we need to succeed in life and also how we can tackle different challenges. We have worked collaboratively and designed a garden that would be inclusive for all. In addition, we had the challenge of creating a banana car. As a group, we discussed our ideas and all group members played an active part in creating the banana car. We then reflected on our master pieces and discussed what we found challenging and how we overcome these barriers.

Year 3 researched the Arctic based on their Power of Reading text ‘Pugs of the Frozen North’. They researched, planned, wrote, edited and published their very own non-chronological reports. They thought about the features of the text and included a heading, sub-headings, photographs and different sentence types.

In year 3 we started our new topic 'Out of Africa'. For our WOW day we explored different African patterns and created a collaborative piece of art. We also made African masks.

In Hockney’s Gymnastics sessions we have been looking at different ways to travel across the floor and equipment. We have thought about good posture and maintaining body tension. We have introduced apparatus with our body movements and thought about how to travel using the hoops. We have enjoyed watching each other’s routines.

We have been looking at poetry and finding features such as alliteration, personification and adjectives. Once we have found examples, we will see if we can use these in our own work to write a poem about the beach.

The children created cards, posters and postcards to thank important people in our community.

The children have been adding a 3-digit number and 2-digit number using column addition. They have also looked at complements to 100.

Year 3 have enjoyed writing their own poems based on food from the poetry anthology ‘Werewolf Club Rules’. The children planned their poems carefully before writing them. They were then given the opportunity to edit and publish their work.

Lowry 3 have been researching the development of HS2 and what this means for the environment. We located the cities that will be affected and shared our thoughts about this. We then took part in a debate and shared our opinions on these issues.

Having discussed our enquiry question and looked at a timeline to explore the history of travel we started to explore different modes of transport for our WOW day. We researched the Montgolfier brothers and made our own 3D hot air balloons. We looked at different shaped boats and their purposes and discussed how we thought they were made and why they float. Using origami, we made our own boat from a single piece of paper and tested whether the boats would float or not, trying them out in boat races.

This week we have been exploring our new text, ‘Mouse, Bird, Snake and Wolf’ by David Almond. We are really enjoying this text and the creatures the main characters have created so we decided to create and describe our own creatures. First, we gathered natural materials and then we created our own creature. We had to discuss our creatures with our friends, thinking about adjectives, expanded noun phrases and prepositions.

We have been exploring the place value charts and counters to add 1s and 10s to a 3-digit number. It was tricky to remember to exchange on some of the questions but we remembered to use our 3B4T.

Mental Health Day. The children wore yellow to show their support for mental health.

This week, Year 3 have been studying rocks. We now know all about the different rock types and how rocks are formed. We carried out an experiment to find out if different rocks are permeable or if they can be eroded easily. Our collaboration skills were fantastic and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Poetry performance. Children analysed some poems in their English lessons and then wrote their own about a beach. They included adjectives, alliteration and personification. They then performed their pieces to the class focusing on fluency and expression.

The children are really enjoying their text ‘Gregory Cool’ which is set in Tobago. They have all written a short piece of writing, trying to persuade people to visit one of the beaches in Tobago.

We are looking at the Stone Age and have enjoyed finding out about the different tools they made and used. We have also discussed the importance of copper for stone age people. The children created posters to try and persuade people to dig in the mines for copper.

In gymnastics, we have been thinking about moving our bodies in different ways. We have been focusing on the skills of travel and rotation.

WOW DAY – we have dressed up for our topic of Rocks, Relics and Rumbles and have spent the day making cave paintings, constructing a time line and finding out facts about the Stone Age and people around that time.

Transition Day - The children enjoyed looking around the junior site and getting to know their new teachers. They are all now looking forward to moving into Year 3. Here are some pictures of some of the activities they completed on the day.
