Sharing Our Learning . . . Year 1 Photo Gallery

WE had a FANTASTIC time at Warwick Castle. We found out about the jobs that people did in the castle and how they prepared for war. We explored how the castle changed over time and watched the wonderful Bird of Prey show.

Today we took part in many Science activities linked to the theme ‘Animals including humans’. First, we learned about the life cycle of a frog. After that, we learned about the neurons in our brain and how they become connected to each other when we learn something new. Then, we learned about moths, their habitat and how they have adapted the colour of their wings over time in order to camouflage and survive. Finally, we took part in a science experiment. After making our predictions, we poured warm water over skittles and learned that the sugar and food colouring dissolves and diffuses through the water.

For World Book Day in Year 1 we researched the author ‘Mark Sperring’. We read three of his new books titled “The Astro Naughty Baddies”, “Norman the knight gets a fright” and “The Don’t Panic Gang”. We created story characters including aliens out of clay, we created our own knight helmets and costumes and puppets to role play the new stories. We enjoyed sharing our World Book Day costumes and the stories that they had come from.

We really enjoyed having our parents come into our classrooms for an afternoon tea. We ate cakes and scones with a cup of tea or juice while showing off all we have learnt about Queen Victoria this half term.

We enjoyed learning about the children’s charity through number games.

We have been learning all about Queen Victoria in Topic and this week, we made Victoria sponge cakes. We practiced out preparing, mixing and spooning skills using a range of equipment. Finally, we tasted and evaluate dour cakes and they were super yummy!

In English, we have been exploring our Power of Reading text ‘The Last Wolf’ by Mini Grey. We have worked hard to plan and write a letter to Little Red to advise her on how she can save the animals and keep them safe in the wild. We had lots of fun writing our letters.

This week we took part in our Victorian ‘Wow Day’. We came to school dressed in Victorian clothing and took part in a Victorian style lesson. Our teacher took the role of a Victorian teacher and we found out how strict the teachers were and the punishments they used to give children. We then practiced writing on slate and played some Victorian style games including ‘British Bulldog’ and ‘Pick up Sticks’.

In Maths, we have been learning the value of the digits in a two-digit number. We made the numbers on a part-whole model using base10.

In Science this week we have enjoyed sorting materials and objects into their different properties. We used a Venn diagram to help us sort. We used scientific vocabulary when sorting including rigid, magnetic, waterproof, absorbent, transparent, opaque and hard. We worked together collaboratively and enjoyed discussing the properties of the different materials.

We have been on an outdoor adventure! We used our five senses to describe the weather and what we needed to wear. We then collected natural resources in order to make our own nature hat. We also experienced a real fire and verbally described using adjectives, alliteration and onomatopoeias. We used all of this information to plan and write a recount of our own Autumn outdoor experience!

In Year 1, we used our counting and addition skills to make our own shop and decide the prices of the items we would sell. Then, we went to each group’s shops and spent our 20p.

In English, we have been reading seasonal poems from the book ‘Out and About’ and we went on an outdoor adventure! We used our five senses to describe the weather and what we needed to wear. Then, we collected natural resources to make a nature hat. After that, we experienced a real fire and came up with some adjectives to describe what we saw on our adventure. Finally, we wrote a recount of our Autumn outdoor adventure!

We have been learning to add and subtract numbers within 20. We have used lots of different resources to represent this and answer written questions. We have really enjoyed using numicon, cubes, counters and our rekenreks to help us learn!

We had a fantastic day starting our new topic in Year 1 ‘Colour Chaos’. First we explored the artist Jackson Pollock and imitated his drip style painting. Then we explored the country of Spain and tried different Spanish food, including Tortillas, Salsa, Olives and Paella Rice. We then finished our day creating our own Spanish Flamenco dances!

We have learnt what part-whole models are and used counters to partition numbers. Can you work out how we have partitioned the numbers 5 and 7?

We have been practicing our balancing skills by balancing on one leg. We made it easier by putting our arms out and made it harder by bringing our arms in and then bending our leg while staying balanced on one leg.

We have been learning how to represent numbers up to 10 in many different ways. We have really enjoyed our hands on lessons using our resource boxes. Can you spot which number is missing from the sequence?

We welcomed our new topic 'Moon Zoom' in style as we came to school dressed as astronauts, aliens, the solar system and more! We looked at the art work of Julie Perrot before creating our own space artwork using chalk. We practiced using the chalk in different ways to draw a range of lines and shapes.
