Sharing Our Learning. . .Year 6 Photo Gallery

As part of our final express event, we took place in a protest around school, which ended with us protesting in the playground to stop deforestation and save the Amazon Rainforest. The children devised their own poster with slogans and then created a chant to share their message.

In Maths, Year 6 have been consolidating their statistics knowledge. They have been answering questions, finding information in graphs and drawing their own climate graph.

We have talked about physical and human features in geography and why both are important in geography.

To begin our topic, Amazing Amazonia, we have been learning about where the rainforests are located and developed our knowledge of the countries that are in South Africa.

Part of our writing sequence includes editing our work. Here we are making changes to our writing.

To celebrate the end of our Topic, we held an Express Event where we showcased our learning and performed our 'I Have a Dream' speech. We all faced our nerves to get up in front of our parents.

During PE we practised our jump, balance and rolls and created a sequence using all 3.

We enjoyed celebrating the coronation by creating a portrait of the new King Charles, using a cereal box.

In PE we enjoyed playing the game of Jump Ball, where the aim was to knock the balls off the cones using a smaller ball.

We used calligraphy to create a piece of art in the style of Screen Prince.

In PE, we learnt how to pass the ball to play a game of Tag Rugby.

We were lucky to have a visit from Lingotots today, where we had a workshop about how we travel to places. We warmed up by counting in French then looked at different ways of travelling.

On Wednesday, we had a visit from a company to do a Science workshop with us.

As part of our Engage event, the children found out what discrimination is and showed an understanding of how people would feel when they were discriminated against. The children felt a mixture of outrage and guilt when they were given different privileges.

As part of our Express event, Year 6 and Year 5 held an art gallery to show their pieces of art. Year 6 enjoyed looking at Year 5's artwork (which they had completed their own version of last year) and sharing in the successes of the phase.

In PE we have played games of dodgeball, which really made our heart rate increase.

Year 6 made collages in the style of Derek Gores. Each picture had a message to share with the audience.

To complete our Science topic, year 6 created their own YouTube videos all about light.

During Topic sessions, we have been enjoying researching vegan meals using the iPads.

In English, we have enjoyed working with our peers to edit our work.

We have been learning about how light travels in Science. We experimented with how shadows are made and how to change the size of a shadow.

During our computing lessons, we were creating quizzes for new members of year 6, based on our previous learning during Science and Topic.

Year 6 enjoyed their visit from Lingotots

In PE, year 6 have enjoyed learning the game Bean Bag Raid. The aim is to get as many bean bags as you can into your team's hoop.

Year 6 were excited to welcome their parents in to our Maths Workshop.

During Topic lessons, we have learnt about different types of renewable energy sources and made presentations to the class.

We take part in Activate to wake our brains up to get ready for work.

From reading our book, 'The Song From Somewhere Else', we made freeze frames of key parts in the book before completing our writing based on the character's experiences.

As part of our Engage day, we made large collages out of materials that could be recycled. We learnt about different types of materials and their properties.

During Computing, we have been learning about digital footprints and thinking about how these can be positive and negative. We found how different information can be found and shared with lots of people online.

This evening, Year 6 enjoyed a lovely camp fire and learnt how to light a fire using a fire flint and striker to ignite a piece of cotton wool.

Year 6 have arrived at Mount Cook and completed their first activities! They have climbed walls, conquered their fears on the zip wire, learned to shoot an arrow with a bow at archery and taken part in a massive game of archery tag. They're enjoying an evening meal consisting of pizza, fish, jacket potatoes and salad.

After making our mug cakes we investigated where plate boundaries are and the different geographical features that are found near the plate boundaries. We showed this half term's value of collaboration when we worked in our groups.

As part of Year 6’s Wow Day, they used their D&T skills to make melt in the middle mug cakes. The children carefully measured out their ingredients, choosing their filling before enjoying and evaluating their cake.

During Computing sessions, we are looking at keeping safe online. To start our new topic, we investigated different symbols and discussed if they showed a safe space on the internet or if they could cause harm to us or our computers.

As part of our new Science topic, we worked together to show our current understanding of the human body. We drew the outline of a body, adding the heart, lungs and kidneys. We made sure they were in the right position, then added blood vessels to show oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. We found out that all blood is red and the blue is only used on diagrams to show deoxygenated blood. We learnt that the circulatory system is a closed circuit, and blood keeps passing around it. Ennis 6 enjoyed singing the Circulatory System song.

As part of our Topic Express Day, Year 6 created informative posters to answer our historical question: What did the Ancient Egyptians achieve and what did it enable them to accomplish?

Year 6 used clay and paint to complete their Canopic jars. They did a fabulous job!

On Black History Day at Valley, Year 6 learnt about the Black Lives Matter movement and incidents of racism around the world. They then wrote powerful poems based on anti-racism using emotive and figurative language.

During assemblies we have been thinking about who has the power in bullying situations. We thought of reasons why someone may be involved in bullying and wrote letters on our whiteboards on their behalf to the victim of bullying.

In RE, we have thought about the commitment a Muslim makes during their daily lives. In one lesson, we focused on the Hajj and thought about which part we would find the hardest and why.

On the European Day of Languages we had a visit from Lingotots, who worked on some French with us.

Farah 6 enjoyed singing along to Happy by Pharrell Williams in music.

In Topic, Year 6 used their D&T skills to build Egyptian temples. They worked in groups to carefully select their materials, considering how to join them, while focusing on how to strengthen and reinforce their structures.

In Maths, we have been working on using Place Value to answer Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division problems.

In English, we have worked on building our description writing skills. We began by writing a basic description and by the end of the lesson impressed ourselves with our improved descriptions.

In Science, Year 6 investigated how the brightness of bulbs in a series circuit changes depending on how many components are in the circuit. We started by making predictions, deciding if certain circuits would be brighter or dimmer if bulbs or cells were added or taken away. We then made the circuits and recorded our observations. We found that the more bulbs in a circuit, the dimmer they are and the more cells in a circuit, the brighter the bulbs are.

In RE, Year 6 have been learning about Zakah/Zakat, where Muslims give to charity as one of their religious duties to show their commitment to god. We did research using the Islamic Relief website, learning how donations are used.

During Science lessons, we have used practical resources to discover the components an electrical circuit needs to have to work. We found all circuits need to be a complete, closed circuit (with no breaks) and needed a power source for a light bulb to successfully light up, or a motor to run and a buzzer to create sound.

In English lessons, we have been working hard to edit and improve our writing, acting like an author would before their writing was published in a book.

Year 6 have designed their own Canopic Jar, using wire and modroc they created the armaments of the Canopic Jar, ready for decorating at a later date.

During PE sessions, we have been learning the game of throw tennis. We developed our chest passing skills and catching the ball, then took part in a rally to develop our reactions for the game of throw tennis.

Year 6 have enjoyed the start of their new book ‘The Last Wild’ and enjoyed using their imagination to devise a way for Kester to escape. They’ve been working hard to add their RAG targets during their lessons.

In PSHE, Year 6 identified their strengths and goals for this year and the future, discussing their fears and worries. They also considered how their strengths can help them reach their goals and ways that they can overcome their worries.

Year 6 enjoyed learning about the geography of Egypt, thinking about why different cities and monuments were built in different places, the use of canopic jars and going caving to discover King Tutankhamun's tomb like Howard Carter did.

In Science, Farah, Ennis and Simmonds 6 explored electrical circuits and their components. They challenged themselves to make a bulb light up and explored the function of other components, investigating the result when they were added to a circuit.

During PSHE sessions, we follow the Jigsaw charter. Ennis 6 enjoyed making their own charter and adding to a class charter.

Ennis 6 enjoyed going on a scavenger hunt to find important areas of our classroom. They managed to find all the letters to spell out 'Welcome to Year 6'.

Transition Day was fabulous, smiles and laughter were plentiful. Everybody is looking forward to September now!
