Wonderful Writers!

The children were introduced to their new topic 'The Seven Kingdoms'. On their WOW day, they experienced what it was like to be a Viking for the day! The children made their own bread before baking it on an open fire and enjoying it with some honey and fruit. They also planted some vegetables and herbs as well as learning how to write their name and decode some sentences using the Viking Rune alphabet.

This half term, year 4 are finding out about sound. On Wednesday they looked at how sound is made using vibrations. They also went on a sound walk to find the quietest and noisiest places around school.

During this half term, Years 3 and 4 have been learning about the effects of plastic pollution on the environment and how we can reduce plastic waste. As part of this process, during their English lessons, the children wrote a formal letter to Miss Milewski sharing their findings and providing suggestions on ways we could reduce plastic waste at Valley.

In English and Topic, year 3 and 4 have been learning about the effects of plastic on animals and the environment. To help tackle this problem, they have created some lovely pieces of work using recycled materials: The children wrote a set of instructions on how to make a bird feeder using a plastic bottle. Have a look at the instructions Zakariya wrote, you could even use them to make your own at home!

In topic, year 4 researched an African artist called El Anatsui who creates sculptures from recycled materials. The children have been inspired by his work and created their own sculptures of African animals using recycled materials. Take a look at just some of their amazing sculptures, can you guess what African animals they have recreated?

In Art, our LKS2 bubbles have been busy creating a collaborative piece of art from one of The African Big 5. The children all had sections of a lion to colour or decorate in any way they wanted.

Christmas cards with a twist-literally!! In the run up to the end of term, the children have had lots of fun exploring and developing their Design and Technology skills (cutting, shaping, finishing and mastering movement using pivots, levers and sliders) when making their own Christmas cards. We hope you enjoy following their card-making journey through the wonderful photographs captured by their teachers and their cards have taken pride of place at home.

Sharman 4 enjoyed a very exciting afternoon filled with Christmas party activities and celebrating the December birthdays! They decorated gingerbread men, played some classic party games including pass the parcel and danced to their favourite Christmas songs.

Year 4 have been learning about the importance of physical activity and engaging in our exciting '12 days of fitmas' activities. Sharman 4 particularly enjoyed the game "What's the time Mrs Claus?" and the Bobsleigh Challenge.

Year 4 spread a lot of Christmas Joy this week with their own version of Twelve days of Christmas. The video of this can be found on the video resource centre.

After a full half term exploring islands and landscapes, Year 4 have created their own landscape art based on an island they designed. They used a range of materials and techniques including finger painting, paper collage, chalk, glitter, pompoms, and pipe cleaners to create some beautiful pieces of artwork.

Year 4 have been learning in RE this half term about Christmas and what it means to Christians. They learned about Christingles including what each part represents, when they are made and why. They then made their own Christingles using oranges, ribbon, cocktail sticks, sweets and a candle.

Sharman 4 really enjoyed their party to celebrate the children who had birthdays in September, October in November. After eating cake and receiving gifts, they played party games and danced to their favourite songs.

In year 4 this week, we have been learning about the digestive system in science. We did a practical lesson where we looked at the journey of a piece of food through the intestines, using some Weetabix, water and a pair of tights.

For black history day, Year 4 worked hard researching Ruby Bridges. They had great fun drawing her and creating mobiles explaining why she is a hero to us and what makes a normal person a real-life hero.

Here are just some of the amazing topic projects that Miss Wyn-Jones has received from her class as part of their home learning. Evie with her lovely Roman sandals made using natural materials, and Poppy's creative sword and shield.

We looked at what the Romans used catapults for before planning and designing our own. We then made them using lollipop sticks and rubber bands. Then we tested our catapults in the classroom and outside using pompoms.

Here's a video of the catapults being tested!

This week in english, we have created newspapers about the challenge between the Iron Man and the Space Bat Angel Dragon. Newton 4 were super ‘roving’ reporters and interviewed an eye- witness or a character.

In English, year 4 have been planning and writing a newspaper article.

In history, Year 4 enjoyed learning about the Iceni tribe and wrote a newspaper article about Boudicca’s revolt.

Year 4 have worked hard adding two four-digit numbers, finding missing numbers and solving problems.

Mosaics made by Year 4. We have studied Roman mosaics and produced these lovely designs using paint, stamps and cut up paper.

Miss Propert was extremely pleased to receive the first piece of Year 4 Topic Home Learning. Wow! Well done, Ethan Jones for creating an amazing Roman shield.

Year 4 had a fantastic WOW day on Wednesday. They all came to school dressed as Romans and Celts. First, we learnt about Roman numerals and used lollipop sticks to make them. In the afternoon, we learnt about Roman Gods and Goddesses. We also found out about Roman society and entertainment including Gladiators! We finished the afternoon by making our own shields so we could do battle!

We look forward to welcoming all our children back on 1st September... take a look at our short film clip showing how our classrooms have developed during the summer break so they are all ready for you to come and do some wonderful learning... the displays and various areas are started but need some brilliant work from you to make them come alive!

Our Classrooms... all clean and tidy and ready for us to help create our own learning environment and displays!
