Sharing Our Learning. . .Reception Photo Gallery

We had a fabulous Sports Day this week.

This week in POR, Reception have been acting our new story The Leopard's Drum. We have been so good at retelling the story and had a go at writing a new version of the story. In maths we have been exploring how to share fairly and learnt that when sharing everyone must have the same amount. Here are some of our examples: “It is not shared fairly because the mini beast and the ladybird have 3 and the caterpillar only has 2, not everyone has the same amount” “It is shared fairly because everyone has 4 cubes” “It is shared fairly because 6 is an even number and I can share it out in 2 groups as they all have partners” “When we want to share something out fairly, we need to give out one cube at a time to each person and then go back to the start 1 for this person, 1 for this person, 1 for this person. 1 for this person. Now I start again”

We have had a fantastic start this half-term. We have started our learning in our new Topic, Safari Adventure. We had a fantastic time at the Safari Park and enjoyed looking at all the animals. We now know the names of many animals and we were very well behaved on our trip.

On Monday in Reception, we had our topic Express Day. We came to school dressed as minibeasts and Nursery came to watch our assembly. We told them lots of facts that we have learnt about minibeasts, and we sang and danced for them. On Wednesday, we bid a fond farewell to our butterflies which we have been able to observe since they were tiny caterpillars. We have loved learning about the lifecycle of butterflies.

This week we have really enjoyed having Coronation related activities alongside our usual challenges for us to engage with and complete. We enjoyed making crowns, flags and collages and we discussed King Charles's Coronation that took place over the weekend with our friends. We had a Coronation Picnic which we have all enjoyed with our crowns and flags ready for our very own Coronation celebration. We have also enjoyed extending our learning on Minibeasts and we have been making observations of each caterpillar and they have all now turned into a chrysalis - we can't wait for them to transform into butterflies!!

We used all of our investigating skills outside this week when we went on a minibeast hut. We had already looked at habitats and used this knowledge to look in all the best places.

We have continued to observe our Minibeast friends that have arrived in Reception. We have been noticing the changes that have been happening to them. We have also been observing other minibeasts carefully and practising our accurate drawing skills as well as our sentence writing about these.

On Friday, more minibeasts arrived. Now we have some stick insects to observe too!!

We have had an exciting first day back after the Easter holiday! The day started with us receiving a card from the postman stating that he had tried to deliver a parcel. The teachers told us that we are going to be learning about minibeasts this half term so maybe the parcel is some minibeasts. We predicted what it could be. Whilst we waited for the postman to return we made some cupcakes and then turned them into butterfly cakes. Our parcel arrived in the afternoon. On the box it said ‘butterflies’ but when we opened the box it contained caterpillars!

Today in Reception, we made a healthy Rainbow Salad as part of our topic My Garden. We enjoyed preparing the salad and discussing why we need a healthy diet. It was delicious. You could try making it at home too by following the recipe at https://www.superhealthykids.com/rainbow-green-bean-salad/

We had an interesting time on Science Day using our sense of smell to identify items form the kitchen. We then matched them to the pictures.

This week, in Reception we became handy gardeners and planted runner bean seeds. We are looking forward to seeing what happens to the seeds. We have used lots of new vocabulary including seeds, plant, observe, grow and change. We also, thoroughly enjoyed Science Day on Friday. We used our sense of smell to predict what we could smell in the different pots and matched the smell to a picture of the smell.

The snow has arrived! We discussed how the weather has changed and where the snow came from and where it will go.

We have enjoyed researching Shrove Tuesday and making our own pancakes.

Today, we arrived at school and spotted a tiny little door and a letter from some fairies. They asked us to look for signs of Spring. We went for a walk to the park and spotted lots of signs of Spring.

To end our Monster topic we made (and enjoyed eating) Gruffalo Crumble. We learnt how to read and follow a recipe, we explored using new equipment safely, observed how the ingredients changed during the preparation and cooking processes and finally we developed our vocabulary as we evaluated the crumble.

This week in Reception we have been very busy. In Power of Reading, we have continued to read the story the Gruffalo. This has inspired lots of Gruffalo activities including some writing. We have applied our skills of Fred talking the sounds, using finger spaces and the correct letter formation to write what the mouse said in the story. In Maths we have identified how numbers can be represented in different ways and we started to learn how to combine two groups together. We used tens frames to help us. It was also Safer Internet Day on Thursday, and we learned different ways we can keep safe online.

This week in Reception we had the opportunity to join in a workshop with Dance Magic. We learned some traditional Chinese dancing and got to meet Dave the Dragon!

This week we are celebrating National Storytelling Week. We joined a live virtual session with the author Wendy Shearer and then enjoyed telling our own stories.

We are getting ready to start a new Power of Reading book but before we even look at the book, we have visited where the story is set - the woods. We can't wait to find out what the story is about....

We have had an exciting week in Reception. We celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year by eating Chinese food and writing a list of what would be needed for a party to celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year. We enjoyed learning a dragon dance. We found out about lots of traditions such as cleaning the house, fireworks, receiving money in red envelopes and hanging letters on a wish tree. We set and wrote our own wishes. We then compared these traditions with New Year’s Day earlier this year.

We have had a fabulous first week back. We have started our new topic 'Monsters' by making monster biscuits, learning a monster dance and using our imaginations to suggest where the monster footprints came from and where the monster is now!!

We have been looking at different toys from the past. We've learnt to play pick up sticks and given the yo-yo a go. We have also been practicing our speed cup stacking, and we think we are getting better each time!

Our new Maths Shed has arrived outside. We have loved finding the resources and inventing our own maths games.

In Reception, we been very busy in the Creating Room this week, especially with the junk modelling where we have made butterflies and flowers from tissue paper and monsters and machines from different bits of recycling.

We love using our resources in new and imaginative ways. We made a picnic with our Maths resources, our own set of wheels with the tyres as well as a den with the pegs and mats.

We are really enjoying all the pre writing opportunities in Reception. We have used tweezers to help strengthen our hands and have developed our fine motor skills using the miniature pegs and washing lines. The message centre in the home corner has kept us busy leaving messages for each other. We hope to see lots of parents at our phonic workshops next work to hear how you can support writing and reading at home.

We had a fabulous day today learning about the history of Bonfire Night. We observed fire works and made edible sparklers.

Reception had a wonderful day today looking for signs of Autumn on our walk around the park. We found acorns, pine cones, conkers and leaves that were a variety of colours and sizes and discussed why some were on the floor and some were on the trees. We listened to the sounds of leaves crunching as we walked on them and we discussed the weather. We can't wait to go along to see how different the park looks in other seasons.

Reception have been enjoying the weather! We made lots of muddy recipes and looked at what happens to the chalks when we put them in puddles.

Reception have been talking about their families. We have looked at who is in our family and what we like to do together. We've learnt that although our families are different, they are all special to us!

We have thoroughly enjoyed our first few weeks in Reception. We have learnt new routines and vocabulary and have explored the environment indoors and out.

We hope you enjoyed your teddy bear picnics with us last term. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you all back in September.
