We will be studying many exciting topics this year. These include Mexico and the Mayans, Invaders, Wild Waters, Britain at Play, Walls and Barricades and Europe.
Staff
In Year 5 the teachers are Mrs La Touche, Mr Hilditch and Miss Taylor. The Year 5 staff believe that a fun, challenging education is the right of all children.
PE
The children will have outdoor PE on a Monday and a indoor PE session on a Friday. PE kits should be in school every day.
Curriculum
Over the year we have 6 main learning topics:-
Mexico and the Mayans – investigation ancient Mexico and the people who used to live there.
Invaders – finding out about the invasions of the Angles, Saxons and the Scots.
Wild Waters- investigating different rivers and coasts.
Britain at Play – looking at leisure and entertainment in the 20th Century.
Walls and Barricades – identifying if walls and barricades are borders or barriers and are used to defend or divide.
Europe –
Homework
Children are issued with homework every Thursday. The homework will consist of Maths and English and will be due in on the following Monday. We will also send home projects linked to our topics for children to complete over a longer period.
Reading books will be changed at least once a week. Children’s reading should be recorded in their reading diary and an adult should sign to comfirm that a book has been completed.
Spellings will be given out every Friday and the children will be tested on these on the following Friday. The spellings will link to the National Curriculum expectations for Year 5.
Thematic Curriculum
We have tried hard to link subjects, where possible, to our main topic so that children gain a better understanding of the topic they are studying and also see the links between different subjects.
