We started our new topic 'North, South, East, West with a walk around Elmdon Park. We used a variety of directional language, such as left, right, across, around the corner to direct the teachers to the park. During the walk, we found lots of physical and human features in the park and recorded our findings.

We have really enjoyed making arrays in Maths. We have been working out how many rows and columns are in each array and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to find out how many counters there are in total.

We have really been enjoying our new topic 'Animals including humans'. We found out what different animals eat and used a Venn diagram to sort the animals into 'carnivores', 'herbivores' and 'omnivores'. We then challenged ourselves further to create our own food chains.

We have been working hard to publish our fantastic writing. We hope you enjoy reading it.

Look at our beautfiul book corners! A wonderful place to enjoy a book or two.

We celebrated World Book Day and explored the amazing world of books and reading. Throughout the day, we explored our key author ‘Sue Hendra’ who wrote the series of ‘Supertato’, ‘Keith the cat with the magic hat’ and many more. We spent the day exploring the Supertato series, including the original Supertato, Supertato the great eggscape and Supertato and the Evil Pea. We created our own Easter chicks to for the vegetables to escape, created our own puppet show to retell the story of the Evil Pea and Beanstalk and then created our own Supertato characters using potatoes and materials.

We had a very exciting Wednesday. We went to Kenilworth Castle as part of our topic 'Towers, Turrets and Tunnels' We marched like soldiers and pretended to shoot arrows out of the arrow loops. We enjoyed linking our learning in the classroom to a real life castle. The staff at Kenilworth castle were amazed at how knowledgeable we were!

In PE this week we focused on developing our ball skills. We began by using both hands to roll a ball around our body with control. We then challenged ourselves further by using only one hand. Some of us even controlled the ball around our body without rolling it on the floor.

We took part in Science Day linked to the theme ‘Connections.’ Our first activity was to ‘Plant Our Pants.’ We discussed the importance of soil in our lives and then chose a place to plant our pants. We looked at the colour and texture of the soil and predicted what would happen to our pants after 8 weeks. We then tested our sense of smell in our next activity. We had to use our sense of smell to identify different scents without using our other senses. We identified coffee, chocolate, orange, lemon and salt and vinegar crisps in our groups. Our last activity was to create our own fingerprints using different powders. We looked closely at the lines on our fingers and compared our fingerprints to our partners. We then used different powders to create our fingerprints. We thoroughly enjoyed being scientists for the day!

Throughout this week, we have been learning about measuring height and length in our Maths lessons. We used different non-standard measure, such as cubes and counters, to measure the length of different objects and then we used a ruler to measure. We found out that length and height can be measured in centimetres.

This week, we have been learning about the artist Pablo Picasso. We learnt that he created abstract paintings. We found the painting very funny and a bit crazy! We then created our own pieces of art using his abstract style.

This week we have been learning how to maintain good body tension in gymnastics. We had to create different shapes and hold the shape for a set amount of time. We balanced on different parts of the body and looked at how we could challenge ourselves further by balancing on just one hand and one foot. We then worked in pairs to create a series of shapes.

This week in Year One, we splashed into our new Topic ‘Colour Chaos’. As part of our WOW Day on Thursday, we created a drip painting in the style of Jackson Pollok. We used the ‘tapping’ and ‘splashing’ technique to create drips of colour and different lines and shapes. Year One are looking forward to more creativity during this topic.

This week was Real Life Maths week, we designed our own shop. We chose the items for sale in our shops and the prices.

As part of our Power of Reading text 'Out and About', Year 1 enjoyed experiencing a real fire safely. We used our senses to describe the fire and used these ideas to create our own Fire poems.

In Music, we enjoyed using the glockenspiels to play a beat to the song, Hey you!

In P.E, we have been learning how to jump and land on two feet safely. We practised jumping forwards, backwards and sideways.

We had a fantastic start to their new topic 'Moon Zoom' by creating fruit skewer rockets and paper rockets. We worked hard to develop our Design and Technology skills, including cutting using scissors and using a knife safely.

We have been learning to find one more and one less within 10 in Maths. We have used a range of resources to help us do this including cubes and counters. We have also been learning how compare numbers using less than, more than and equal to. We have had fun comparing numbers!

This week in Year 1, we have been learning all about materials in Science. We have worked hard to identify which materials were waterproof and absorbent. We then decided which material would be best to make an umbrella which is waterproof. We had lots of fun experimenting with materials!

In PSHE, we introduced ourselves to Jigsaw Jack, our new Jigsaw character. He was very anxious about starting Year 1, so we thought of some ways to make him feel more at ease.

This week we have started to read our Power of Reading book, ‘Traction Man.’ We created our own settings using a range of collage resources and then generated adjectives to describe our settings. In our next lesson, we used these adjectives to write a setting description. Later on in the week, we focused on describing some of the characters in the story too.

This week in maths we have been exploring different ways of representing numbers, We have enjoyed exploring our new Y1 resources including numicon, dominoes, cards, counters and counting objects. We worked collaboratively with our friends and tried hard to be 'Reciprocal Ruth's'.

We really enjoyed taking part in our Victorian ‘Wow Day.’ We came into school dressed in Victorian clothing and took part in a Victorian style lesson. Our teacher took the role of the Victorian teacher and we found out how strict the teachers were and the punishments they used to give children. We then practised writing on slate and took part in Victorian style games including ‘Cat’s Cradle’ and ‘Pick up Sticks.’

Transition Day was fabulous, smiles and laughter were plentiful. Everybody is looking forward to September now!
