Sharing Our Learning . . . Reception Photo Gallery

We have been inspired by our Power of Reading Story 'Argh Spider' and have been re-enacting it outside using construction to make the family house.

During provision this week, we have created our own minibeasts using different materials and then discussed how we made own creations. We also used our observation skills to draw minibeasts. We looked closely so that we could add detail to our drawings.

We had an exciting first week back after the Easter holiday! The week started with us receiving a card from the postman stating that he had tried to deliver a parcel. The teachers told us that we are going to be learning about minibeasts this half term so maybe the parcel will be some minibeasts. We predicted what it could be. Whilst we waited for the postman to return, we made some cupcakes and then turned them into butterfly cakes. Our parcel arrived on Wednesday. On the box it said ‘butterflies’ but when we opened the box it contained caterpillars!

We have loved learning how Christians celebrate Easter and enjoyed showing everyone our Easter bonnets.

Reception became gardeners on Science Day. We planted our own bean seeds and discussed what plants needed to grow. We decided that our beans would need soil, water and sunlight to grow healthily. We also decided that we would need to give our beans time to grow. Now we just need to wait for our beans to sprout. We also looked at seasonal changes in trees and made our own seasons wheel.

World Book Day - Reception had an exciting start to the day when we received a hand written letter from the author and illustrator Rebecca Cobb. We can't wait to find out all about her.

It was World Book Day today and Reception had a fabulous day enjoying books and reading. We came to school dressed as our favourite characters and listened to different stories written by the author Rebecca Cobb. During the day we found out lots of information about Rebecca Cobb and were very impressed to discover that she is an illustrator as well as an author. We completed lots of activities linked to her books.

In Maths, we have been exploring the composition of 7. We were able to identify 7 by looking for smaller numbers within the group. Here are some of our examples ‘ I can see 1 at the bottom and 6 at the top’ ‘There’s 3 and 3 and 1’ I’ve got 2, 2, 2 and 1’ ‘4 here and 3 here’ ‘There’s 5 and 2’

To end our Monster topic, we made (and enjoyed eating) Gruffalo Crumble. We learnt how to follow a recipe, we explored using new equipment safely, observed how the ingredients changed during the preparation and cooking processes and finally we developed our vocabulary as we evaluated the crumble.

Make your own Gruffalo Crumble at home

The GRUFFALO (SONG & 3D VIDEO)

We started our new Power of Reading book this week - The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. We picked out all the vocabulary that describes what the Gruffalo looks like. See if you can hear the description in the song that we enjoyed singing along to.

This week we have shown perseverance when using clay for the first time. We moulded and shaped the clay to create our own 3D colour monsters. We are looking forward to painting them and displaying them in our Express Art Exhibition to parents on 5th February. In Maths, we have been learning our number bonds for the number 5. We have been using the number rhyme, ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’ to help us recall pairs of numbers that make 5. Our teacher hid some of the frogs in the pool and we guessed how many were hidden by looking at the frogs still on the log.

In Maths this week we have been solving problems about ordering numbers. We worked out what number tower was missing when our teacher took 1 number tower away and where we could not see 1 more.

We had a fabulous launch to our Monsters Topic. We listened to monster stories, made monster biscuits and learnt a monster dance.

On Monday we came into school to discover that Christmas had arrived at Valley. We got to work straight away by decorating the Christmas tree together and wrapping presents to put underneath the tree. On Friday we finished our week by coming to school in our sparkles! We love our Christmas countdown.

We visited Elmdon Church today as part of our RE lessons. We enjoyed finding out how Christians celebrate Christmas.

This week, we have continued to learn about ‘parts and ‘whole’ in our maths focus time. We used different resources to create parts of the number 3, 4 and 5. We even used our new learning when creating models from junk modelling. Can you see the parts we used to make a whole?

We love stories in Reception. It was very exciting to come back to school in the dark to enjoy a hot chocolate and a bedtime story with our teachers and friends.

As part of Real-Life Maths week, we designed a method of moving water. We used different containers to transport water from the water trays to the water butt. We discussed how fast can we move it and how can we lift the container.

We welcomed parents to our phonics workshops this week. We are extremely proud of the process that the children have made in phonics this term.

This week we started our new topic, Then and Now. We found out about the history around Guy Fawkes and fireworks and then we made edible fireworks and enjoyed seeing some real fireworks outside. We also went on an Autumn walk and compared Autumn with Summer.

We have continued our topic on ‘All about Me.’ We have found out about the people in society that help us and have explored this through our play and in our Topic lessons. We learnt that firefighters put out fires and vets look after our animals when they are poorly. We discussed our rules that keep us safe and help us to learn. We heard we all have the right to keep safe and learn. Miss Milewski came to visit us and shared her role in the school community. We had the chance to ask her questions about what she does such as what do you do every day and how do you make sure everyone is safe?

We are making lots of progress learning our sounds in phonics and we are now using a lot of our new knowledge in our writing in our play.

In the Exploring Room this week, we have been thinking about how to make our building structures stable so they don’t topple over. We used magnetic blocks to create castles, car parks and rockets. On Friday we enjoyed spending time in the library choosing a book to take home to share with our families.

We have continued to explore our outdoor environment. There are lots to do outside and it keeps us busy all day. We have been developing our climbing and balancing skills and even made a ramp for the cars to race down. We have been solving problems by working together in the water and building different houses to shelter us from the rain. We even had time to go inside, and role play our POR story ‘No Dinner.’ What busy children we are!

In maths this week, we have used our subitising skills to instantly say how many objects are in a group without counting them. We then sorted pictures of objects by how many we could see.

This week in our Maths lessons, we have been learning how to create and continue repeating patterns. We then demonstrated our new learning independently in one of our weekly rainbow challenges.

We have enjoyed our first few days exploring the Reception environment.
