Our Hubs

At Valley Primary School, our Hub provision provides targeted and specialist support for children with additional needs who have an EHCP.

Our Hubs offer smaller, highly adapted learning environments alongside opportunities for children to remain part of their mainstream class and wider school community wherever appropriate.

Provision is carefully matched to each child’s individual needs (using section F of the EHCP to guide), strengths and developmental level. Support may include an adapted curriculum, specialist intervention, communication support, sensory regulation and opportunities to develop independence.

Our Hub provision forms part of our graduated approach to SEND support, alongside high-quality classroom teaching, reasonable adaptations and advice from external professionals where required.

Aims

Our Hub provision aims to:

provide a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment;
remove barriers to learning and participation;
provide teaching at an appropriate developmental level;
develop communication, interaction, literacy, numeracy and independence;
support emotional and sensory regulation;
provide targeted specialist interventions;
promote positive relationships and supported interaction with peers;
increase access to mainstream learning wherever appropriate;
work closely with families and external professionals;
celebrate individual progress and achievement.

Eclipse Hub

Old Lode Lane | Years 5 and 6

Eclipse Hub is our Cognition and Learning provision for pupils in Years 5 and 6 who are working at pre-key stage levels.

Children access an adapted pre-key stage curriculum with a strong focus on the core skills they will need for future learning and greater independence.

Learning focuses particularly on:

functional literacy;
reading and phonics;
writing and communication;
core numeracy skills;
independence and life skills;
vocabulary development;
confidence and engagement with learning.

Teaching is broken into manageable steps with regular opportunities for repetition, overlearning and practical application.

This builds upon our established Hub approach of providing alternative English and mathematics teaching, including life-skills and literacy-focused learning, for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations.

Moonlight Hub

Old Lode Lane | Years 3 and 4

Moonlight Hub is our Cognition and Learning provision for children in Years 3 and 4 who are working at pre-key stage levels.

Children follow an adapted pre-key stage curriculum matched carefully to their developmental starting points.

Provision includes:

small-step teaching;
early literacy and phonics;
early mathematical skills;
communication and vocabulary development;
practical and multisensory learning;
repetition and consolidation;
independence skills;
supported interaction with peers.

Children continue to access appropriate opportunities within their mainstream class and wider year group wherever suitable.

Twilight Hub

Old Lode Lane | Year 2

Twilight Hub is our Communication and Interaction provision for Year 2 pupils who are working at a pre-Early Learning Goal level.

Twilight provides a low sensory-demand, total communication environment where children can develop the foundations of communication, play, interaction and learning.

Provision is based around continuous provision and may include:

Intensive Interaction;
supported play;
shared attention and turn-taking;
visual communication;
sensory regulation;
early communication development;
fine and gross motor development;
early literacy and numeracy experiences;
predictable routines and opportunities to develop independence.

We use a total communication approach, recognising and supporting different ways of communicating, including speech, gesture, objects, pictures, symbols and signing where appropriate.

Our established Infant Hub model includes approaches such as continuous provision, PECS, Attention Autism, sensory activities and Makaton/Signalong alongside specialist intervention.

Sunlight Hub

Fallowfield Road | Reception and Year 1

Sunlight Hub is our Communication and Interaction provision for children in Reception and Year 1 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Sunlight provides a highly adapted, low sensory-demand and total communication environment, with continuous provision at the heart of children's learning.

Children are supported through:

Intensive Interaction;
child-led and supported play;
shared attention;
early communication;
sensory and regulation activities;
visual supports;
predictable routines;
early literacy and numeracy experiences;
fine and gross motor development;
independence skills.

Learning is carefully matched to each child's developmental stage. Progress may include increased engagement, communication, interaction, independence and ability to regulate alongside familiar adults.

Children remain valued members of their mainstream year group and access appropriate class and whole-school experiences wherever possible.

Specialist Interventions in our Hubs

Alongside our core Hub groups, our Hub spaces are used to provide targeted specialist interventions for children across the school.

Communication and Interaction

Support may include:

Language Link;
WellComm;
Colourful Semantics;
Intensive Interaction;
Attention Autism approaches;
vocabulary development;
visual communication;
supported social interaction;
Makaton/Signalong where appropriate;
Lego-based social communication activities.

We also use communication assessments and screening tools including Language Link, WellComm, BPVS and CAST screening and observation.

Cognition and Learning

Support may include:

phonics and early reading;
precision teaching;
First 100 Words;
Number Stacks;
targeted maths intervention;
pre-teaching;
touch typing;
Nessy;
Numbots;
structured literacy support;
multisensory literacy and numeracy activities.

Our assessment tools include Sandwell Numeracy, Visual Stress screening, Working Memory assessment, Dyslexia Screening and Read Write Inc. assessment.
