We have been developing their understanding of animal classification in Science by exploring the characteristics of different vertebrate and invertebrate groups. We examined key features such as appearance, raising their young and well-known example species within each scientific group. Through discussion and careful observation, we compared mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish with invertebrate groups such as worms and molluscs. The lesson encouraged us to use precise scientific vocabulary and to recognise how animals can be grouped according to shared characteristics.
